Percy X 'Odyssey' Gets the Surgeon Treatment as Soma Turns 35

Percy X's 'Odyssey' returns in a Surgeon remix on Soma Records — 134 BPM of raw, hypnotic techno from the third instalment of the label's 35th-anniversary series. Tony Scott has been on Soma since 1994; here one of UK techno's most exacting producers rebuilds his catalogue for 2026.

The short version

Soma Records is 35 years old, and it is marking the occasion by handing its own catalogue to other producers. The third instalment of the SOMA35 series gives four contemporary names the Percy X archive — and the pick of the four is Surgeon's rebuild of "Odyssey".

It is 134 BPM, C minor, five minutes and forty-eight seconds of raw, deep, hypnotic techno. No drop, no vocal, no gesture toward a festival. Just a groove that keeps folding in on itself.

Why this one

Percy X is Tony Scott, a Glasgow producer who has been part of the Soma family since 1994, when his debut X-Tracks began one of the longest-running relationships in the label's history. Spyx, Gain and Where's The Music followed, along with a run of EPs and singles that helped define Soma's early identity: stripped back, machine-driven, unhurried.

That is a difficult catalogue to touch. Surgeon — Anthony Child, one of the most exacting producers in UK techno — does not decorate it. He takes the bones of "Odyssey" and re-tensions them, letting the track breathe where the original pushed and pushing where it held back. The result sits squarely in the "raw / deep / hypnotic" corner of techno, which is exactly where this music belongs.

The rest of the release is no filler either: Phara at 138 BPM, Lindsey Herbert down at 71 BPM, and Voicedrone & Gareth Wild closing it out. Across four tracks the package spans 71 to 142 BPM — built for different moments in a set rather than for a playlist.

The context worth knowing

The SOMA35 series has been running all year: Slam took 35.1 in June, Surgeon took 35.2 in August with remixes of his own, and 35.3 now turns to Percy X. A label using its anniversary to commission remixes of its back catalogue — rather than reissuing it untouched — is making an argument about its own relevance, and the argument holds up.

Soma was founded in Glasgow in 1991. Thirty-five years later it is still putting out music that sounds like it was made in a room with the lights off, which is more than most labels of that age can claim.

Bottom line: if you want one techno track from the past fortnight that rewards repeat listening rather than a first-listen reaction, this is it. Surgeon does not do spectacle; he does pressure.
