Marc Acardipane Returns to Rotterdam for Boiler Room

Boiler Room took over Rotterdam's Maassilo grain silo on 26 September and gave the harder half of the bill to the man who helped invent the sound. Marc Acardipane's 58-minute set, published on 9 October, is now past 53,000 views: PCP-era hardcore techno played as a working DJ set, not a nostalgia slot.

The most talked-about DJ set of the week is a 58-minute hardcore techno set recorded inside a converted grain silo in Rotterdam, and the man behind the decks is the reason the room exists in that form.

Boiler Room returned to Rotterdam on 26 September 2026 for a session at Maassilo, the converted grain silo on Maashaven Zuidzijde that has become the default room for anything too loud for the city's regular clubs. The bill was deliberately split: UK garage and speed garage on one side (Diffrent, Saint Ludo, Entasia, DJ Crisps, Gabriel Muñoz, Paige Tomlinson, Dr Dubplate, Essy), hard house and gabber on the other — headlined by Marc Acardipane, with Cynthia Spiering, Lil Texas and DJ Distortion alongside him. The sets went up on Boiler Room's channels in early October. Acardipane's landed on 9 October and has passed 53,000 views in its first week, which for a gabber set in 2026 is a statement in itself.

Why this one matters

Marc Acardipane is not a booking you make for atmosphere. Recording as The Mover and running Frankfurt's Planet Core Productions, which he founded in 1989 with Thorsten Lambart, he was one half of Mescalinum United, whose "We Have Arrived" is the record most histories of the genre point to as the founding document of hardcore techno — the moment tempo and distortion were pushed past what house DJs of the era were willing to play. Rotterdam's own gabber scene took that idea further still, which is why booking him at Maassilo reads less like a legacy slot and more like returning a borrowed record to the city that wore it out.

What the set actually does

This is a DJ set, not a live PA or a greatest-hits playback. The community tracklist that has been compiled from the upload runs through twenty-odd cuts and is largely Acardipane's own catalogue under his various aliases and the labels that grew around him: Rave Creator's "A New Mind (Cold Rush Phuture Mix)", Max-E-Crew's "Skywalker Has Landed", "Atmos-Fear" by The Mover & Rave Creator, Pilldriver's "Pitch-Hiker", Tschabos' "Gib Mir Die Bass (Noch Korrekter!!!)", "Stereo Murder (Remix)" as Marshall Masters, and Inferno Bros.' "Slaves To The Rave". Around those sit records from the wider hardcore continuum — Deathlok Hardcore Team's "The Power", Darrien Kelly & The Unknown MC's "The People Want More", Miro's "Final Signal", and newer material such as Miro's "Purple Moon 2025" and Starving Insect's "The Sea of Darkness". Tempo stays high and the mixing is functional rather than showy, which is exactly the point: the selection carries the set.

The rest of the session is worth the same attention. Cynthia Spiering, a Rotterdam selector who runs the Courtoisy label and event series she founded in 2019, delivers 57 minutes of gabber classics — DJ Paul Elstak's "Rave On (DJ Paul's Forze Mix)", Vanugenth The 5th's "Here We Go Again", The Stunned Guys' "Musica Nevrotica (DJ Giangy Remix)", The Prophet's "Big Boys Don't Cry", 3 Steps Ahead's "Drop It (Happy Mix)". Lil Texas brings the frenchcore and hardstyle end of the same tempo range. Together they make the case that the hard end of the bill, not the garage half, set the night's ceiling: the event data compiled by Mood for the Rotterdam listing rates the session 0.88 on tempo against a 0.61 city average and 0.6 on grit against 0.41, while commerciality sits below the city average at 0.39.

The bigger picture

Hard and fast is having another moment, and Boiler Room is one of the reasons. The label's own hard-dance strand has been running since 2019, but the past month has been unusually dense: AEREA's live set from Boiler Room Maastricht, premiered on 1 October, is already past 150,000 views, and Boiler Room Tokyo runs on 17–18 October. Acardipane himself is touring the sound into rooms that are not hardcore parties — his Unpolished debut as The Mover is part of the same wave.
